Child Therapy in Ontario, CA
In-Person Counseling for Children Ages 5+
Is your child struggling with anxiety, emotional outbursts, behavioral challenges, depression, trauma, or difficulties at school?
At Blue Oak Counseling, we provide in-person child therapy in Ontario, CA for children as young as 5 years old. Our experienced child therapists create a safe, supportive environment where children can express themselves, build coping skills, and develop emotional resilience.
We understand that many children arrive feeling uncertain or resistant to therapy. It's common to hear, "I don't want to be here." Our therapists are specially trained to meet children where they are, helping them feel comfortable through engaging, age-appropriate therapeutic activities that foster trust and connection.
How Child Therapy Works
Children often communicate differently than adults. Instead of relying solely on conversation, our therapists use interactive and creative approaches to help children express their thoughts, emotions, and experiences.
Some of the techniques we use include:
-
Play Therapy
-
Art Therapy
-
Therapeutic Games
-
"Would You Rather" Activities
-
Get-to-Know-You Cards
-
Rapport-Building Exercises
These approaches help children feel comfortable while providing valuable insight into their emotional world. Schedule your appointment today and take the first step toward helping your child build confidence, resilience, and emotional well-being
Why Play Therapy Matters
For adults, therapy often means talking things through. But for children , especially younger ones — words aren't always the easiest way to express what's going on inside. Play is a child's natural language. It's how they explore feelings, test out new ideas, and make sense of a world that can feel confusing or overwhelming.
Play therapy meets kids where they are.
Rather than asking a child to sit and talk about their feelings, play therapy gives them tools, toys, art, storytelling, sand trays, role play, to show what they may not yet have the words for. A therapist trained in play therapy watches, listens, and gently guides, helping a child process emotions at their own pace.
It helps children build emotional skills.
Through play, kids learn to name their feelings, understand cause and effect, and practice new ways of coping with stress, fear, or frustration. These are skills that carry into everyday life, at home, at school, and in relationships with family and friends.
It creates a safe space for big feelings. Children experiencing anxiety, grief, family changes, trauma, or behavioral struggles often don't have the vocabulary to explain what's wrong. Play therapy offers a low-pressure way to work through those experiences without forcing a child to talk before they're ready.

Room to move and play. Younger kids often express themselves through activity, not conversation — in-person sessions make space for that.

Fewer distractions. A dedicated, private office can help teens open up more easily than a screen at home.
