Art Therapy for Kids and Teens

Sometimes it is hard for a child or teen to put what they are feeling into words.
Art therapy at our Ontario Office offers another way to explore emotions, share experiences, and connect with a therapist in a supportive space. There is no need to be “good at art.” The focus is on the creative process and what it means to your child, rather than making a finished piece.

How art therapy can help

Children and teens may use art therapy to explore stress, anxiety, grief, changes at home or school, friendships, identity, and other challenges. A therapist can help them notice feelings, practice ways to cope, and build confidence in expressing themselves. Each young person’s experience and goals are different.

What happens in a session?
Sessions may include drawing, painting, collage, or other creative activities alongside conversation. Your child can choose how much they want to share about their artwork. The therapist will tailor sessions to their age, comfort level, and needs.

Parents and caregivers are an important part of the process. We can discuss your concerns, explain how sessions work, and talk about appropriate ways to support your child while respecting their privacy.

Frequently asked questions

Does my child need to be good at art?

No. Art therapy is about exploring and expressing experiences through the creative process. Artistic skill is not required.

What ages do you work with?

Art therapy can be adapted for children and teens. Contact us to discuss your child’s age and needs so we can determine whether our service is a good fit.

Will my child have to talk about their artwork?

No. Your child can share at their own pace. The therapist may invite conversation, but there is no need to explain or “decode” every image they make.

Will parents be involved?

We welcome parent and caregiver input. We’ll discuss how to support your child and what information can be shared while respecting their privacy.
