Therapy Approaches

Psychotherapy

Talk therapy is one of many ways to help people find a more appropriate level of mental health. Rather than medical treatment, it helps identify thoughts and behaviors which may not be conducive to health.

Psychotherapy relies heavily on the therapeutic relationship between the client and therapist. As well as being effective for clinical conditions such as depression and anxiety, psychotherapy is also used to treat day-to-day life challenges and high-pressure situations.

Various different styles of psychotherapy exist and include cognitive-behavioral, psychoanalytic, and supportive approaches, but most therapists use a holistic approach in treatment; in other words, they combine different approaches to address the needs of their clients. When deciding how to do this, a psychotherapist draws upon empirical research, then listens and responds accordingly.

Why is talk therapy good for mental health?

Therapy is a great way to get your emotions out and sort through them with someone who will listen. Therapy is not just for people who are struggling with mental health issues, but also for those seeking more clarity in their lives. It is a safe place where you can get your thoughts and feelings heard and understood by another person.

One thing that therapy does really well is help you gain perspective on the parts of your life that may be causing depression or stress.

Therapy approaches and modalities

During each appointment, what you'll do depends on your therapist's preferred methods and the issues you'd like to address. Sometimes, you both will discuss how challenging situations, emotions, and behaviors affect your life. Other times, you may focus on action-oriented approach to mental health treatment.

It is ultimately up to you to make the choice. Keep in mind that many therapists combine techniques from different therapies to help their clients. Also, it's perfectly normal to try one approach, find that it doesn't work for you, and try another.

It can be challenging to discuss your mental health symptoms with a stranger, regardless of which therapy approach you choose. With time, this often becomes easier.

What kind of therapy is best?

Identifying the problem or need may provide some insight into the type of therapy to be selected. If someone is struggling with depression, cognitive behavioral therapy may be a good fit.

Choosing a mental health professional who can help is also important. It is also important to consider whether in-person therapy or telehealth sessions are more appropriate based on technological advances in the mental health field.
